In one of the most ambitious mobile portals from a major Web brand, Yahoo Go puts search, news, finance, weather, sports, e-mail, entertainment news, Flickr photos, and local searching and mapping into a single interface. You rotate through these widget icons, each of which calls up the relevant content screen. Once you personalize each area with your location and your news and team preferences, the Go format gives you a quick glance at all the top-line info, including your Yahoo Mail.

Drilling into any one of these content buckets lets you go very deep. Financial news provides top business and finance headlines, while a ticker provides breaking news and stock quotes. In news and entertainment, you can find and subscribe to RSS feeds from the major sources. The local directories are especially strong, as they deliver information on nearby businesses, including direct dialing and quick access to maps and directions. The "oneSearch" search box is superb; it's intelligent enough to recognize the intent of your query and delivers the most relevant results in a series of categories geared for the mobile format, such as images, mobile Web pages, and news stories.

In many ways, Yahoo Go for Mobile 2.0 replaces a number of mapping, news, and entertainment products you may be paying for on mobile. Many of the widget pages have banner ads, but that is a small price to pay for a free service. For now, Yahoo Go works on around 100 phones across the major carriers (we used the Motorola RAZR V3xx), and the company says it will eventually be supported by nearly twice that many.

In general, we like this application because of everything it provides under one roof, but it's not quite perfect. We noticed a delay of a few seconds when opening news articles, for example, and Yahoo fills this dead time with user tips. Otherwise, Yahoo Go for Mobile 2.0 is the best example yet of Web 2.0 convenience in your pocket.
