![]() This expensive 802.11b device doubles, and in some cases triples, the typical range that most wireless access points muster. In terms of security and speed, there are better options for half the cost, but the WR1500 does its job and does it well. Security options on the router are about a year behind the times. Other routers pack one-touch security, on-chip AES encryption, and built-in VPN (virtual private networking). The WR1500 does support pass-through VPN and 128-bit WEP security, but not WPA or AES. That's a more serious problem because the extended range makes the signal more easily accessible. Speed was another critical issue with the WR1500. The throughput hovered around 5 Mbps, according to Ixia QCheck testing software. Even in the same room, using a high-powered laptop and the Direct2Data WLAN1500, the signal rose to only 6 Mbps. That's typical throughput for 802.11b, but pales in comparison to speed-enhanced 802.11g routers now flooding the market. What did impress us was how steady the connection was, even at a great distance. From 600 feet, the WR1500 maintained a 5-Mbps signal. In a home setting, this means you can cover your entire yard or, in an office, an entire floor or even multiple floors. The WR1500 is a smart option for wide-area public hotspots, such as coffee shops, libraries, bus terminals, and airports. In most settings, it is better to install two routers (which might still cost less than the WR1500) and create a network bridge. For small-office and home users who might not have the technical wherewithal to link two wireless routers, however, the WR1500 makes more sense. The company provides a 30-day guarantee, so you can test the router and make sure you get the coverage you want. ParkerVision has planned an 802.11g version for late 2004 or early 2005. If the updated product is priced more aggressively, and the speeds approach anything close to 20 Mbps at the 600-foot range, it may become an ideal choice for any user. As it stands, the WR1500 is best-suited to those who want an easy way to create a wireless network with amazingly wide coverage.
