by John Brandon SETUP Like most network cameras, the Hawking HNC720G includes an installation CD that walks you through the configuration process. Unfortunately, we initially had some trouble accessing the camera due to an Internet Explorer problem in recognizing the ActiveX control used for viewing. FEATURES The HNC720G competes with the D-Link DCS-6620G in terms of the Pan, Tilt, and Zoom controls and powerful monitoring software. You can set the camera to pan 270 degrees sideways and tilt 135 degrees up and down, stopping automatically when it senses motion and recording an MPEG-4 video clip. Like most network cams, you can then configure the device to send you an e-mail when it detects an intruder. (Unlike a higher-end home security system, the sensors do not differentiate between a person and a house pet). The most attractive feature is price; the Hawking HNC720G sells for about $400 less than the D-Link. AUDIO/VIDEO QUALITY Quality was predictably lower than the more expensive D-Link DCS-6620G, largely due to the 4X digital zoom. In our tests, the HNC720G could rotate fine and zoom towards an object, but the picture became more and more distorted as we angled the lens down a driveway. Using Hosted Video, we quickly configured the camera for remote monitoring. From a nearby coffee shop, the video feed looked exactly the same as it did when we viewed it in the same room that we positioned the camera. VERDICT This mid-range Wi-Fi cam doesn't compete with the D-Link DCS-6620G in terms of video quality, but given its monitoring capability and pain-free installation, the Hawking offers a lot of bang for your buck.
