Dell has managed to create a PDA that, like a high-performance sports car, appeals to the raw power lust in all of us. The X51v would feel right at home in the office, but it's really aimed at users that want to watch videos, play games, and listen to music on their PDA. Dell couples a 624-MHz processor with a dedicated Intel 2700G graphics chip and a stunning 16MB of video memory. The screen, which measures an impressive 3.7 inches, is rendered in full 640 x 480-pixel VGA resolution.

The result is that the PDA is optimized for video playback and 3D gaming, and the companion CD comes with a handful of stunning titles that show how cool entertainment titles can be on a PDA.

The Axim ships with a generous combination of 19 demos plus fully functional programs and games. Applications include Battery Pack Lite, Calligrapher, Resco Picture Viewer, and SPB Finance. The Axim's 3D graphics processor gets a workout with the 3D puzzle game Enigmo, golf sim Toy Golf, and Geo Rally 3D racing game. You won't confuse any of these games for Half Life 2; the graphics are more on par with the original Sony PlayStation, but it's impressive to see such quality on a handheld. Even a Tony Hawk title, Pro Skater 2, is available for fans of the popular franchise.

It might play 3D games, but that doesn't mean that Dell has dropped the ball in other areas. Our X51v came equipped with 256MB of ROM and 64MB of RAM (144MB is user-accessible), plus dual CompactFlash and SDIO slots. It includes one of the most thoughtful button layouts we've seen on a PDA, complete with side buttons to activate the wireless feature and lock the device in the on or off positions. Unfortunately, the five-way navigation control is a bit cramped, which can make game control a bit cumbersome.

For wireless connectivity the X51v has both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and Dell offers a complete line of optional Bluetooth accessories including a GPS receiver, headset, and keyboard. Even the cradle offers a little more than you'd expect; it has a slot to charge a second battery.

We definitely recommend that upgrade. The X51v offers more endurance that its predecessor, but it provided a mere 2.5 hours of runtime with the backlight on. If you're just playing MP3s, you can expect nearly 13 hours of endurance.

Overall, the X51v is the top Windows Mobile 5.0 Pocket PC. It boasts the best design, superfast performance, and superb 3D graphics to make the most of your time between meetings.
