In the wonderful world of wireless, the best companies just keep innovating with products that provide more features for less money. Case in point: D-Link and its astounding DI-784, a tri-band router designed for mixed-mode environments. With 802.11a, you can rely on a constant signal that runs at 40 Mbps from 5 or 50 feet away. Music and movie fans know that any drop in signal quality spells certain doom for your evening of entertainment. And, if you provide coverage in a business setting, 802.11a is more reliable for those who need to stream both media and business docs back to the home office. Yet, with 802.11g, access speeds will also zip along, albeit with more susceptibility to radio interference. And, the router is compatible with 802.11b devices such as PDAs.

In tests, the router-which can provide both 802.11a and 802.11g signals simultaneously-worked flawlessly and only suffered signal drop-outs in 802.11a beyond the 200-foot radius. The router also lets you enable WPA encryption and supports most of the typical firewall and pass-through VPN options. The DI-784 also lets you authenticate users with 802.1x. A step-by-step wizard walks you through the basic connection and configuration options, but it can't compete with the ease of Buffalo Technology's one-touch AOSS security setup.

For anyone who needs to provide a multilayered approach to wireless service, the D-Link DI-784 is a triple threat.
