Dropping a bomb on the PC industry-and putting the likes of Samsung, OQO, FlipStart, and Sony all on notice-smart phone maker HTC today unveiled its first Windows Vista-enabled PC. Called the Shift, this mini notebook features a 7-inch touchscreen and a relatively large slide-out keyboard. The device, which is about the size "of a couple of DVD cases," can be used in three ways: in slate mode with a stylus, in BlackBerry-style mode (although the layout is a bit large for thumb typing), or in desktop mode, thanks to a sturdy hinge.
To the right of the screen you'll find a tiny touchpad designed by Synaptics, which provides another means of cursor control, while the left side houses the two mouse buttons. Other features include a 30GB hard drive, tri-band HSDPA and Wi-Fi connectivity, and a USB port. Presenters will be pleased by the VGA port (for connecting a projector), and the SD Card slot enables users to transfer files to the Shift from cell phones, digital cameras, and other devices.
HTC dropped by LAPTOP's offices before CTIA to show us the Shift, and we think it looks like a more compelling option than the split-keyboard Samsung Q1 Ultra launched at CeBit, especially for highly mobile professionals. The device will run Windows Vista business, but the company is keeping other key details-like the CPU, price, and actual weight and dimensions-closer to the vest until closer to launch, which will be in the third quarter.
Time will tell whether PC buyers will trust a brand known for smart phones, but we like what we see so far. The screen is big enough so you don't find yourself having to zoom in every five seconds, and the keyboard is big enough for pecking out a quick message or editing documents. Assuming the price is right and the battery life is solid, the Shift could not only give other UMPCs a run for the their money but also more traditional ultraportable notebooks.
Price: TBD
