Hollywood for Download
Are video-on-demand sites ready for prime time, or ahead of their time?
by Marc Saltzman GreenCine: Eclectic to the Max
If you haven’t heard of GreenCine (www.greencine.com), you aren’t alone. This VOD site is an alternative online movie rental solution, with a modest 200 titles (mainly foreign and independent films) and about 100 adult movies. The site cycles through different titles on a regular basis. ![]() Both the Windows Media and DivX players are supported; the former is reserved for streaming titles ($2.99 to $4.99), while the latter is used for downloads ($4.99). It should be noted that you can also stream the movie off your hard drive with the DivX player a minute or two after the download commences. Downloaded movies are viewable for 10 days, but users can rent it longer at a discounted rate. We tested a Hong Kong action film, entitled The Assailant. It downloaded in just a few minutes, and the video and audio quality of the movie was excellent. In fact, it looked better than both Windows Media and Real films downloaded the same week from other services. VOD isn’t GreenCine’s
primary service; the company is actually a DVD delivery service, much
like Netflix, with a focus on more independent and hard-to-find films. If
you’re in the mood for something out of the ordinary, GreenCine is a good
place to look.
