Rumble in the Bronx
With hoodies on our backs and Samsung K5s on our shoulders.
by Brian Heater
Recently we had the bright idea to haul a 20-inch Dell XPS M2010 'laptop' around the island of Manhattan. To our surprise, we created a bit of a stir on the Internet. And though there were a lot of people who appreciated our efforts, we still were met with our fair share of detractors-notably, a handful of Engadget readers, who were quick to criticize after the site linked to our story. It seems they wanted nothing more than to see us drag the 18-pound desktop replacement to one of the mythical 'outer boroughs.' Bring it to Brooklyn, they demanded, or Queens, or even the Bronx (or maybe that other one that starts with an 'S,' though honestly we can't remember what it's called, either). We recognized the challenge they posed, and just waited for the right product to come along. When the Samsung K5 landed on our desks, we knew what we had to do: And it involved two guys, a photographer, one mini-boom box, a hell of a lot of posed high-fives, and the birthplace of hip-hop. Unlike the XPS M2010, the K5 is tiny, but has some booming sounds. We boarded the train from our cushy, midtown station and headed uptown to the Bronx, with LAPTOP's resident reformed b-boy, Jeffrey Wilson, in tow. The goal was clear: to bump some old-school tunes on our sweet mp3-player with slide-out speakers and single-handedly usher in the new era of Krush Groove (or, at the very least, some semblance of electric boogalooing). What we got instead were even more befuddled stares than we had bargained for, some bad directions from a teacher at a mid-Bronx public school, whom our photographer, Leslie, asked nicely to point toward the 'birthplace of hip-hop,' and some vaguely threatening shouts from the windows of parked cars. Oh, and for some reason, none of the bystanders who we asked to pose in our shots took us up on the offer. Our best guess is that they were PC World readers. Loyalties die hard, it seems. We're not entirely sure the world is ready for a return to the old school, via the fine people at Samsung Electronics. Still, all said, we made it out in one piece, our tiny K5 intact, blog readers be damned. Next week, be sure to check out LAPTOP's review of Otterbox's waterproof iPod case written from the New York City Aquarium's shark tank. Until then, peace out.
