In 2006, movie studios finally caught up with illegal file sharing services to offer legal downloadable cinema content. Or did they? Paid download services are proliferating, but few are truly viable. Every service requires a software client and restricts file usage, sometimes ruling out portable players altogether. And at $9.99 to $19.99, the price per flick remains way too high. Major films hit DVD and download services simultaneously, but the DVD is often cheaper. The advantages of a movie download service should be convenience and competitive pricing, but these services only occasionally satisfy one of these criteria, and never nail both.
