Sure, wearing a wireless Bluetooth headset makes it easier to gab while you’re walking to the office or standing in line at Starbucks. But how does your Bluetooth make you look to random passersby--and more specifically, to women?

To find out, we set out to New York City’s Bryant Park on a Friday afternoon during Fashion Week, when models, designers, fashion editors, and press gather in this Midtown location to display and scout the season’s trends. Amid the paparazzi, the high heels, and the propaganda, we spoke to several fashion-forward females attending the event and got their opinions on three of the latest Bluetooth headsets.

The Professional One

We started off with the Jabra BT5020, the largest headset of the group. What would their first impressions be of a man who was walking down the street wearing it? The women agreed that such a headset would spur associations such as “professional” and “businessman.” “It’s definitely something someone important would be wearing,” said Courtney Fairclough.

The Fashion-Forward One

Onto the Aliph Jawbone, a headset clearly not made to blend in with its surroundings. “To wear the red one,” Emily Plaister said of the Jawbone, “a man would have to be into fashion.” But other women had different opinions. “It’s manly,” said Kristine Loosen. “And it stands out from the crowd,” added Amanda Wachsmuth. They could picture a regular-guy celebrity wearing it, such as a Kevin James or Matthew McConaughey--someone likable and down to earth. “Someone younger,” said Christa Deleon. All of the women we spoke to preferred the Jawbone of the three.

The Really Tiny One

The last device we showed them was the Motorola Mini H9, by far the tiniest and most inconspicuous headset of the bunch. Surprisingly, this one went over the worst with the women. “The tiny one’s weird--you can’t see it, so it seems like they’re talking to themselves. I feel like a headset needs to be big,” said Kristine. “It’s discreet,” Emily agreed. “It’s something a security guard officer would have.”
